On December 22nd, immediately following Potluck and our Christmas Party, all are invited to help deliver the Bears, sing Christmas carols with the children, then tell our story and watch the delight of the children as they find their "New Friends." What we give is love and assurance to children in a time of uncertainty in their young lives. What we get, as we reach out from our church into our community, is to make wonderful memories that will stay with us forever." Our goal is to deliver 200 bears. We will be loading the bears at 1:30 then departing for downtown to the Salvation Army Women & Children's Shelter. Drive time, building Bear Mountain, and time with the children takes approximately 2 hours total. Printed map and directions will be available. Sometimes in our sojourn on this earth, we are fortunate enough to meet someone who is so filled with love for his fellow man that it awes us. Sky St. John was one of these people. Sky never just took a job. Every venture in his life was a mission. As an entertainer for many years, he brought happiness to others through music. While a nurse in the last existing leper colony in the United States, he sought to bring help and solace. When he chose to become a Unity minister, he used both his musical talents and his passion for teaching to bring people closer to an awareness of their oneness with God and each other. He is beloved by many, including those here at Unity Church of Practical Christianity. His passing may seem unfair, cutting short the friendship and the joy we could have shared with him. For those of us who have been touched by his wonderful light, just imagine your life if you did not have those special memories when your light intermingled with his. In Unity, we know that regardless of outer circumstances, the decision to leave was Sky’s spiritual decision. Just as his life touched so many, his decision to leave may bring some of us to moments of reflection about our own relationship with others and the world in which we live. Even in death, he has given us a wonderful gift! We love you, Sky.
On behalf of Karen French, our Angel Tree Coordinator, we would like to thank each of you who contributed gifts and monetary donations to our 2013 Angel Tree. Thanks to your loving generosity, we were able to provide each of the six children and three seniors with everything on their wish lists! This is our opportunity to share our abundance and love with people in our community we may never meet, but in whose lives we make a difference! Extra special thanks to Vickie May and Henry Barnhardt who helped pack up, load, and deliver the gifts to the Angel Tree drop off location. Thank you to Karen for stepping up and taking over this very important, very special outreach effort! Thanks to each of us ~ it works! UPDATE: We are so sorry to learn that the St. Jude Marathon has been cancelled due to the inclement weather here in Memphis. We know that the runners are disappointed; however, the intention associated with their commitment to train for this marathon has most certainly changed each of their lives, and for this, we know they are grateful for the experience even if they could not actually run the race. ============================================= On Saturday, December 7, four of our UCPC members--Rich and Julianne Tutko and Dennis and Tonia Jackson—are taking part in the St. Jude Memphis Marathon. They will all be running the full (26.2 miles) marathon. There are over 20,000 participants in the day’s four major events: 5K, Half-Marathon, Marathon, and Marathon Relay. This is St. Jude’s largest, single-day fundraising effort of the year. The Tutkos and Jacksons are members of Breakaway Running’s “Breakaway Running For A Cause” team, which is one of the top ten fundraising teams. Prayers for strength and endurance are appreciated as each of them achieves a goal for which they have been training for six months. Let us pray that the weather cooperates so these wonderful people can complete their goal of running this marathon and helping all the children at St. Jude. |
