![]() Greetings, On September 11 we will observe the World Day of Prayer. This event is shared with other individuals and groups from all over the planet. The experience will begin with an opening ceremony on Wednesday at 7 pm followed by a 24 hour prayer vigil at the church. There will be a closing ceremony at 7 pm on Thursday. You will have opportunity to step outside your comfort zone as I challenge you to sign up for a one hour slot in the unbroken chain of prayer. There will also be opportunity for individuals to serve as Keepers of the High Watch. When Jesus was praying in the Garden he asked his disciples to "sit here while I pray." The Keepers will fill a 4 hour slot to make sure everything is in place to welcome and to support those who are praying. The effectiveness of concentrated prayer has been scientifically proven, and we have the opportunity to be a part of that significant influence for our world. I challenge each of you to consider if this is yours to do. You may have never sat in deliberate, focused prayer for a whole hour. You may have never been in prayer in the middle of the night. You may have never felt - really felt yourself to be an integral part of something so monumental. Well, here is your chance!! For your prayer time there will be a guidebook provided with examples of historical prayers. We will have our canvas Labyrinth in place in the sanctuary for your use. There will be the opportunity to add your thoughts to a community journal to create a record of the experience. There will be the opportunity to create a piece of artwork for others to experience. Do you get the idea that this experience will be something you have never had before? I encourage you to choose a time to participate that is not convenient, not comfortable and not easy. I challenge you to: "Expand the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out to the right and to the left" Does that sound familiar? Let us immerse ourselves in this powerful, transformative experience! The signup sheets will be on the information table on Sunday. Another way you can participate on a larger scale is to tune in to the live-streamed events form Unity Village. The live -streamed events are on: Wednesday, 9/10 at 7 pm, Thursday 9/11 at 11 am and 7 pm. The main site is www.worlddayofprayer.org. Blessings, Lawrence ![]() Greetings, I have some exciting news. On Thursday, September 4 at 7 PM, we will have the opportunity to spend an evening with Edd Edwards. Edd was born and raised in Clayton, Georgia, and lives there to this day. His grandmother was a hands-on Christian healer, regarding her gift of healing energy as the Holy Spirit working through her. Edd was born with the gift of this same healing energy, which his grandmother recognized and encouraged in him as a child. Edd played with this energy in his hands and body constantly as he was growing up. In 1994 he met the distinguished physicist, Dr. William Levengood who was able to measure and quantify Edd's energy output in his laboratory. For several years Edd worked on laboratory experiments with Dr. Levengood, He learned how to increase his energy output, to turn the energy output off completely and to affect the lab equipment from a great distance. Edd and the scientists designed and carried out countless experiments, with Edd's measurable output of energy continually increasing. As Edd and the scientists worked, they all began to notice that the people who had been in the lab while the experiments were going on had significant improvements in their own physical ailments. At this point, Edd began deliberately interacting with people who were ill or in pain, trying different kinds of pulse patterns and experimenting with patterns of energy waves until the pain or illness was relieved. He found that it made no difference if he was working with someone one-on-one or with many people at once. His healing gift was effective whether he was in the same room as the receiver or miles removed. Edd will share his understanding of this wonderful energy and offer a limited number of personal sessions. Thursday, September 4 at 7 PM! You can check out Edd's website at www.eddedwards.com. Blessings, Lawrence For more information on this event, contact Rev. Lawrence Palmer. Instead of meeting every week, we guys have decided to meet once a MONTH on the second Tuesday. The next meeting will be September 9, 2014, at Jason's Deli on Chickering Lane, just off Germantown Parkway. This change should make it easier for all the men in the church to carve out time for Guys' Night Out each month, which should help our group to grow. We all get busy with our lives, our jobs, our families, and our normal social commitments. The benefits of meeting regularly with other men can help reduce stress, instill confidence, and make you more optimistic about your life. You are important and deserve some guy-time. Talking with other guys gives you a perspective that you may not get from your family or your significant other. BE KIND to yourself. Bookmark this time on your calendar! `No room! No room!' the March Hare and the Hatter cried out when they saw Alice coming. `There's plenty of room!' said Alice indignantly, and she sat down in a large armchair at one end of the table. ![]() The Mad Hatter's Tea Party drew one hundred and eight people on Saturday, and yes, there was plenty of room! There were hats galore: Victorian tea party hats, garden party hats, Sunday dress hats, turbans, Indian head veils, wizard hats, a yin yang top hat, and even a metal colander gracefully decorated with flowers! The male judges wore black tuxedos with ceremonial white wigs. Large playing cards were tucked into plants and hung on the walls. Billie Gholson allowed us to enjoy her collection of paintings of women in hats. There were antique accessories and other curios on display that provided ambiance while arousing our interest. The creativity of the decorations by Laura Wren and the committee members was a sight to behold! Ah, the food! Such a delightful selection of finger foods provided by women in the church for the festivities. Teas were available, of course, to be enjoyed properly in tea cups of various styles, sizes, and colors. We were also graced by the presence of the Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland. Alice was dressed in the traditional pinafore, and the Mad Hatter wore his trademark hat. The Mad Hatter did not put the Dormouse's head in a teapot, but he did keep Mona Winfrey, the emcee, on her toes! Throughout the tea party we were delighted by the ongoing fashion show, sporting the Dangerous Curves Collection, a line of apparel by M.G. Ballard Designs. Dangerous Curves garments are made by women in the USA who sew to earn a living or to earn extra income. You can learn more about them and buy their garments here: http://www.dangerouscurvescollection.com/ Three of our local women (Pearl Smitherman, Paulette Williamson, and Ann West) along with two women from Dangerous Curves modeled. With all that enthusiasm, you might just see them on Project Runway next season! "I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date! No time to say hello, goodbye! I'm late! I'm late! I'm late!"
If you missed this year's gala, don't forget to get your tickets early next year! ![]() Greetings, Everyone seems to agree that time is going by so fast now. I certainly do not want to encourage that experience, but I do want to point you to a couple of months down the road. September will be our Month of Prayer. We will be sharing a celebration of the World Day of Prayer in our own community while prayer events will be happening all over the planet. Here is a link to connect you with some information about what is happening within our larger Unity community: http://www.worlddayofprayer.org/ Keep your eyes and ears open for details about how we will be observing this powerful day. Blessings, Lawrence ![]() We so enjoy sharing the Christ Consciousness with the young people. We draw from an extensive library of Sunday School resource materials created specifically for them. Our teachers are committed to preparing a fun and informative hour for your child each week. More often than not, the teachers delight and sometimes marvel at their responses. We invite you to bring your child and sit in with us. We promise you that you will be pleased by the experience of seeing their energetic and spontaneous participation. Please drop your children off at the Isabel House between 10:15 and 10:30 so that we can make the most of our time together. It is our blessing to be of service to your child. Linda and Keita, Youth Education Coordinators ![]() Dear Friends, Some of you are aware that I have been the Bookstore Manager since shortly after Rev. Palmer's arrival at Unity Church of Practical Christianity. I will be stepping back from this position at the end of July. Barbara Thompson has enthusiastically agreed to take the position, with the approval of Rev. Palmer, beginning Aug 1. I would like to take a moment to thank all those volunteers who have made it possible to open the door of the bookstore to customers. Our Cashier Supervisor is B.J. Remi. Sandy Taylor and Sharon Moore have been volunteering since last year. Peyton, B.J.'s granddaughter, stepped up as a cashier this summer, but she is returning to college. We recently gained a new volunteer: Sharon Gary. During the week, Julianne Tutko handles the cashier duties for the bookstore. Our bookstore is divided into sections:
We have also made it possible for members and others to purchase books through the bookstore page on the web site, which will also benefit the church. As more and more of us support the bookstore, it will be possible to expand the bookstore's inventory onsite. I know that all of you will also support Barbara Thompson as she moves forward with the bookstore vision. All the best, Dannye Williamsen |
