On Friday, December 29, 2017 Billy "Hopper" Dean set out on a mission to raise awareness of homelessness in our community in a very unique way. With the store manager's permission, he spent the night in the parking lot of Walgreen's at Covington Pike and Stage Road. We asked him to give us an update and here it is:
"Bonnie was sick and couldn't make so I headed out by myself. It was a very cold night but I was so fired up about giving my time to this great cause. Even though I was the only one there I still had a great time and God made his presence known. I made like 20 different signs, reached into the pile and grabbed on out and hit the corner. I was dancing, singing and proudly raising my sign to every passerby. After about 40 minutes I had only collected $4 so I decided to change signs and see what reactions I would get. The sign simply said 'BET YOU CAN'T HIT ME WITH A DOLLAR '. The last as laughs and money, shoes, coats, gloves started coming. I know a lot of people had to be saying, Dear Lord another one escaped from the mental institution again. I was a one man show. In the 2 hours I was on the corner before tapping out from the cold, I received $41 and 2 garbage bags full of items and another $20 donation at Unity this morning. It was a blessed night for our homeless. I plan to do it again but this time during the day on a Saturday. I will keep you posted. All is Well 😊 Much Love, Billy" The money they collected will be given to our January Community Service focus Memphis Empty Bowls. The coats are going to Manna House and the Room In the Inn clothes closet. Thank you Billy and Bonnie for truly living the Unity Principle of "We live the truth we know" and putting feet to your faith by serving the homeless in our community in this way!

Hospitality includes welcoming of guests, and the offering of basic services such as clothing, hygiene items, showers, and serving coffee or other beverages. We seek to interact with our guests and will learn their names and their stories. Manna House is grounded in the spirit of the Catholic Worker Movement and thus we seek to welcome our guests from the streets with a spirit of hospitality that respects their dignity as human beings. We are open every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:00-11:30 a.m. On Monday and Thursday mornings we offer showers for men. On Tuesday mornings we offer showers for women. We believe compassion is contagious and that justice structures compassion so that all may have life to the full.
