Now that summer’s over and the kids are Back To School our Midweek Unity Classes will resume. As with our Summer Film Festival, the lobby area will be available for anyone wishing to “Brown Bag” supper for a little ‘church social’ before class.
Unless otherwise noted, all classes begin at 6:30pm. Our September 2nd class "The Nature of Prayer: Preparation for Unity World Day of Prayer" will provide a discussion of what prayer is, can be, and what it is not. Rev. Donald Crooks will be sharing information and open to Q&A as how to experience prayer continuously in dealing with Life. The goal is to use the most powerful force available to do all we can to help transform our lives and the world. The final film in our Summer Film Festival is Blind Spot, a documentary that illustrates the current energy crisis that our way of life is facing. Whatever the measures of greed, wishful thinking, neglect or ignorance, we have put ourselves at a crossroad which offers two paths, both with dire consequences. If we continue to burn fossil fuels we will choke the life out of the planet and if we don't our way of life will collapse.
Click here for a preview and make plans to join us for this important, eye-opening film! As summer transitions into fall, we are preparing our new Liturgical Art Project and Installation and, as with our beautiful prayer butterflies, it takes all of us working together to bring it to fruition. What is Liturgical Art? It is simply another layer of worship that comes alive for the church community visually, as opposed to the written word or music. It is created by artists and lay people working together to develop a place for visual respite...a place to encounter wonder and mystery. Art has that power and when it is created in community, the power magnifies. This project was designed for our entire church community ~ children, book clubs, prayer groups, AA, friends, everyone! We will all be working together to create the final installation by Sunday, September 27th. The theme of this project is "Liberation". This process is an exercise in releasing the negatives in our lives that are giving us stress, poor health, loss of energy, etc. This is an exercise to help us to move forward individually and collectively to a better world. "The external world mirrors what we feel about ourselves. By letting go of any negative self-judgement, we allow our world to transform, and as it does so, we'll be able to feel greater and greater trust. The more we're able to trust, the more we're able to let go of trying to control the outcome. When we try to move with this flow rather than adhere dogmatically to the doctrines of others or the beliefs we once had that no longer serve us, we more accurately reflect who and what we truly are." Anita Moorjani - Dying To Be Me There are some key dates we will be seeking volunteers to assist with various aspects of the project over and above making your own contribution to the project.
Thank you! On Sunday, August 16th people representing twelve faith practices here in the MidSouth came together here at Unity for an afternoon of blessing Mother Earth and saving children. In cooperation with the Sri Viswayogi Foundation we facilitated the collection of countless books, stuffed animals, and blankets these past few weeks. These items were blessed before being sent on to Project Night Night for distribution to homeless children in our community. We look forward to continued partnership with the Interfaith Community as we seek to be the change we wish to see in our world. UCPC is joining Project Night Night in helping homeless children have sweeter dreams.
Project Night Night donates over 25,000 Night Night Packages each year to homeless children 12 and under who need our childhood essentials to have a concrete and predictable source of security and an increased exposure to high-quality literacy materials during their time of upheaval. Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-appropriate children's book, and a stuffed animal -- all nestled inside of a new canvas tote bag. By providing objects of reliable comfort, Project Night Night reduces trauma and advances the emotional and cognitive well-being of the children we serve. Please bring new, soft, "cuddly" toys, a new blanket, or a new or gently used children's book and place them on the metal rack outside the bookstore door. |
